❓ Did you know "Top Gear" was premiered during Rank 1's Trance Energy 2005 live performance as an untitled track? It was originally not supposed to be released, but the crowd reaction to it and subsequent fan hype made Piet and Benno change their minds: it was selected as the B-side of what would eventually become the Opus 17 / Top Gear EP.
❓ Top Gear seems to be a self-referencing kind of title, since the track sounds like the engine on a vehicle as it powers up and speeds through. Though could it be the guys were also just really big fans of the British tv show of the same name?
❓ "Opus 17" is a self-explanatory title. It was Rank 1's 17th original work at the time: Opus Track 1 The Citrus Juicer 2 Black Snow 3 Airwave 4 Such Is Life (feat. Shanokee) 5 Awakening 6-13 Symsonic - Cosmomatic - Conspiracy - T.T.C. - Down From The Deep - Equilibrium - Passage To The Unknown - Still In My Mind [order unknown] 14 Beats At Rank-1 Dotcom 15 After Me 16 Top Gear 17 Opus 17 Surprised? I always believed Opus 17 to have preceded Top Gear but in hindsight it seemed that Opus was created and added AFTER Top Gear which most likely existed as early as January 2025. Also, The Anthem 2003 is not listed here because prior to Spotify era "retconning conventions", this track was credited to the artist "Sensation" rather than Rank 1. As such, Piet and Benno themselves are believed to not have considered it among their original works as Rank 1. Can you imagine though... In an alternate universe, Opus 17 is called... Opus 18?
❓ Armin van Buuren picked Top Gear as Tune Of The Week on Episode #197 of his A State Of Trance radioshow which aired on Thursday May 19th, 2005.
❓ Lastly, did you know that Opus 17 / Top Gear was released on the 47th birthday of the King Of Pop, the late Great Michael Jackson? This release was destined to be Legendary. ;)
